‘The reason why I co-created Cemetery Club with my friend Christina all those years ago was because cemeteries as cultural spaces were considered anything but (aside from the loyal aficionados and friends groups that oversaw many of them). It was a way to wile away the hours and indulge my love of history, and to invest in a passion I’d had since boyhood.

How different the story is today. The rise of Instagram, various others like myself doing our best to reacquaint ourselves with the dead beneath our feet, heritage lottery funded projects such as the work going on at Abney Park - cemeteries are once again being seen as rich resources that are undeniably important in our connection to the past.

In my own way all I hope to do is respectfully resurrect whoever I’m researching and give them the spotlight, where time has taken the focus away from them since their deaths.’ – Sheldon K. Goodman
