Friends of Tottenham Cemetery

‘Funnily enough I’ve gone to Hartford now but my home, my heart is here. I come whenever I can.

I’m always here.

When there used to be funerals or anything like that. Honestly, years and years ago when there was funerals, all my Dad’s family, my brothers, we’d all sing around the grave, celebrated.

Celebrating their lives.

I miss them big time, and that’s why I come here. When I come here I can hear them singing, I can hear the harmony.’ –

‘There’s definitely a sense of place for people here and when they visit they’re visiting because they’re still processing their grief and you can see that in the loving way that they tend the graves and they clean the area. There’s a whole wave of emotions going through people. It’s not just visiting it’s making sense…I see 60 acres of beautiful open space with believe it or not, there are 40,000 stories here. Every time I’m here I find a new story. There’s a lot of lived lives and each one of them is equal.

What I’ve always enjoyed when I walked here is I’ve tried to find stories which reminded me of how important this area has been in this country’s history of social change.’ –
Ashley, chair of the Friends of Tottenham Cemetery
